Not by Blood But by Creed (Homily for July 4, 2018)

As Americans we are bound not by blood but by our creed. Equality is self-evident only if you believe in God. A foreigner becomes naturalized by embracing Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Founders envisioned Republic of Virtue - "let justice surge like water and goodness like an unfailing stream". Only God is righteous altogether. Accepting trials & suffering as God's will. Example of Fr. Jim Lee. Prayer for the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.

I was impressed with the opening of your July 4th homily when you pointed out that our country is bound not our blood, but by our creed. With our country seeming so disjointed, it was a timely statement and one we all need to remember. You followed it up very well with the description of the Republic of Virtue.

The other highlight for me, was your introduction to Fr. Jim Lee and his wonderful response when someone asked him how he was doing in spite of suffering from a terrible disease, and his answer was always the same, "I'm blessed!" I pray that next time someone asks me how I'm doing, I will respond from my heart as Fr.Jim Lee did; instead of counting my aches and pains, I'll say, "I'm blessed," which is the truth--but I often forget. Thank you, Fr. Phil, your homily left me smiling!
